From the Director's Desk!
We are right in the middle of our Town Wide Book Discussion for 2008 and thoroughly enjoying “The Runaway Quilt” by Jennifer Chiaverini.  Many town libraries are sponsoring this type of event annually.  There are many ways to participate even if you don’t come to the library for one of the book discussions.  When you see someone with one of the “Flying Geese” buttons on their coat, it’s a perfect opportunity to ask how they are enjoying the book.  It’s also a great chance to talk with your family, neighbors and friends about the book and this particular event in American history.  Reading and discussing the books you have read is another opportunity to encourage your children and their friends to appreciate literature and the joy of reading.

Are there any other events?
Additional events are planned to tie in with the topic of the Underground Railroad and Quilts.  Friends of the Library are sponsoring two programs.  On April 9th, Lynn Lydick will appear as “Abby Kelley Foster”, abolitionist and woman’s suffragette.  On April 28th, Elaine Malloy will provide instruction on quilting, “Quilting 101”.  Finally on May 19th, Linda Ramrath, professional quilter, will discuss her “Underground Railroad” quilt which depicts all the various quilt patterns used in assisting escaping slaves on the Underground Railroad.

But what about the Children? Can they learn about this too?"
There are also many, many children’s books about the Underground Railroad on display at the library so I hope you will engage your children in the project as well.  Hopedale has such a unique history; it is fun to tie our own hometown to our nation’s history.
Pick up your “Runaway Quilt” button at the library and wear it proudly when you pick up your book.  .

From the Intern
I originally wanted to finish and post DeRoze Picross on April 5. Of course, I chose probably the busiest two weeks of the school year to try and do so...Rehearsals for the HHS play (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) plus work here plus an animation due Friday for English class doesn't exactly equal up to enough time to create all the 15x15 puzzles in DeRoze Picross.

Instead, my priority project is "Clocks in the Rye," an animation that recaps the most important events (to me) in J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. I may or may not post it on the site because it will have mild language, mild violence, and mild adult themes. But if you're interested in seeing it, send me an email at hopedalelibrary@cwmars.org and I'll send you a link!

Something funky has happened with The Library Trip file, and one of the panels was somehow corrupted. If I can get it open and re-export the panel, then I'll get the next few panels up. Otherwise, I'm not sure what its fate will be...

That's right! The Friends of the Hopedale Library are sponsoring an ongoing book sale at the library! Books that can be purchased are on a cart to the right of the front door. It's cheap, too! Prices range from ten cents to two dollars.

However, due to so many books, the library cannot accept any donations to this sale until further notice...

Knovel Knitters
Meetings are every Wednesday night at 7 pm in the children’s room. Knitting, socializing...what could be better?

"Brown Bag" Book Discussion
On the first Wednesday of each month at noon, there will be a book discussion at the Community House in the Lady's Parlour!
