Safe Child Policy for Parents!

Adopted by the Bancroft Library Board of Trustees - January 26, 2009

Children are always welcome in our library. We care for the safety and well being of our young readers. While library staff is always working to create a safe environment for all, it is necessary for parents and caregivers to do their part.

  • Children aged 8 or under must be accompanied by an adult or caregiver (14 or older) at all times, except when the child is at a program in the program room.  The parent must then remain in the Children's area of the building.
  • The library cannot assume responsibility for the safety of young children.  The physical make-up of our building, with two outside exits, restrooms in the hallway for all the public, and a door to the upstairs make it impossible to see patrons and children at all times. This is especially true of young children. Adults must keep children with them whether upstairs or downstairs.
  • Children aged 9 and over may be left unattended at the discretion of a responsible adult. If the adult feels it is unsafe for the child to leave the building without adult supervision, the child should not be in the library unattended.  Children (9 and older) may be left alone to study, read books, or use the computer. Children will be expected to display appropriate behavior. Children must be able to reach an adult in case of emergency, and both child and adult should be aware of library hours. At closing time, police will be notified to escort unattended children from the library.
  • The Children's Room and computers are reserved for use by children, their parents or caregivers, tutors, or others actively browsing the Juvenile/YA collection.
  • Parents and Caregivers, not library staff, are responsible for the actions and safety of children visiting the library.
