The Friends of the Hopedale Library are pleased to present No Irish Need Apply on Wednesday, March 14th. This program will run from 6:30-8 pm and will take place in the downstairs program room. There is no charge for this program.

christopher daleyHistorian Christopher Daley will present a 90 minute slide lecture about the Irish experience in Boston from the 17th to 20th centuries. The lecture begins with the story of Irish indentured servants in the mid-17th century and continues with the history of the Irish community in Boston, covering the first real migration of the Irish in 1718, the arrival of the Scotch-Irish (Ulster Irish), and the pre-famine trickle of Irish immigrants and resulting increase of anti-Irish sentiment. The massive wave of immigration after the Great Famine will be examined including their condition on arrival, where they settled, the work they did and how they assimilated into American culture. The lecture concludes with the rise of the Irish in Boston politics.

Mr. Daley has been lecturing throughout New England for over 20 years on historical topics of interest, at libraries, historical societies, schools and all sorts of clubs and organizations. Mr. Daley is currently a history teacher in the Silver Lake Regional School System in Kingston, Massachusetts. He holds a B.A. and a M.A. from Bridgewater State University in Political Science and History. Mr. Daley has written several historical articles for local publications and is author of "Murder and Mayhem in Boston: Historic Crimes in the Hub."
