- NEVER place cancdles near trees, curtains/drapes or other flammable items.
- If you place a [real] tree in your house, cut about two inches off the base of the trunk and place it in a reliable stand that holds water. Keep the stand filled with water at all times so the tree does not dry out quickly.
- Keep your [real] tree AWAY from fireplaces, radiators and other heat sources.
- DO NOT block exits with your tree
- Make sure your [artificial] tree is tested and labeled as FIRE RESISTANT.
- If you have small children or animals, AVOID putting breakable ornaments near the base of the tree.
- DO NOT use lights with frayed or bare wires, as well as loose connections.
- TURN OFF all lights [interior and exterior] prior to going to bed or sleep.
- UNPLUG all extension cords when not in use.
- DO NOT use chairs, desks, or other furniture to put up holiday decorations. Use an appropriate step stool or ladder.
- BE PREPARED for the winter! Create a "Survival Kit" for your home to include, but not be limited to: a working flashlight, extra batteries, first aid kit, non-perishable foods, extra warm blankets and clothing, etc.
